For me, photography is a labor of love. I use it as a means of connecting with the people and places that I cherish most in this world. I remain drawn to the idea that there are moments in time that can only be revealed through the camera’s lens. I want to prove that these milliseconds not only existed, but also mattered deeply.
My first camera, a Kodak Disc, was given to me by my Aunt Catherine just months before my mother died. I used it to document my life, which at the time was full of sadness. I went to the drug store and purchased a flower-covered photo album. Here I placed my masterpieces: snapshots of my cousins on Christmas Day, out-of-focus close-ups of my cat, a self-portrait wearing lipstick, and what may be the last photograph ever taken of my mother. I’ve come to believe that there is something immensely powerful about documenting life as you see it, as it speaks to you.
This early photographic experience, as insignificant as it seemed at the time, remains my inspiration as an artist today: photograph the beauty in what is.
I apply this sensibility to each commission that I do, immersing myself in who my clients are and disappearing into their lives while I work.
I live in beautiful Santa Cruz, California with my husband and son, who happen to be some of my favorite subjects.
